Aging is a normal process of life that all human beings face at some point in their lives, according to Geriatric Nursing (2020). The needs of older adults increase as they age, both for their daily living activities and for maintaining their mental and behavioral health. Helping older adults build a quality of life and promote their physical and mental health is crucial. There are many challenges older adults face as they age. The changes are a decline in cognitive function, depression, stress, low self-esteem, lack of sleep, hormonal imbalance, and a variety of chronic diseases that limit physical activity and increase negative psychological effects (Geriatric Nursing, 2020). People who get old will develop dementia, is one of the many myths in this society about an older adult. There is a high rate of depression among older adults. Geriatric Nursing, 2020, states that memory, attention span, and language comprehension deteriorate as people age (Geriatric Nursing, 2020).
It is possible to develop dementia due to a variety of factors, such as using a medication, having a medical condition, or being depressed. Depressive disorders are not normal aging processes, but illnesses that need to be treated immediately, and growing older alone is not a risk factor. Older people often suffer from depression because they have limited interaction with their friends and family and problems with self-perception and self-concept (Geriatric Nursing, 2020). In order to maintain a healthy aging process, older adults should engage with their family and friends and minimize isolation (Geriatric Nursing, 2020). Because nurses spend more time caring for the elderly and their families, nurses play a vital role in promoting older adults (Jacob et al.,2021). The nurse should collaborate with the elderly patients and their families and find out the problem areas and their needs to maintain a quality of life for that adult (Jacob et al.,2021). I recently was dealing with older neighbors, that being secluded from Covid-19 had taken a toll on them both. She has Alzheimer’s, and he was functioning and working remotely in the beginning. He was in denial about her disease process; She was a very successful lawyer who had to retire early. We had to get the family involved who live out of state. They spoke daily but did not visit because they were told everything was ok. We had to intervene to get medical help for the husband secondary to drinking. Long story short, they recently moved to an over-65 community with family nearby.
Nurses caring for the elderly need to realize that they are also caring for the caretakers. To improve the effectiveness and quality of care for older people, nurse should reflect on their job responsibility and promote independence while caring for the elderly and focus on the patient who depends on their family caregivers and focus on what should be a professional contribution to issues of dependency (Jacob et al.,2021). To avoid conflict and misunderstandings, those who care for the elderly must understand their patient’s physical and mental conditions. Helping caregivers navigate supports system within the community and how the resources can help both them and the people they care for. It is important that caregivers encourage independence and involved the elderly in their care. In a similar manner, nurses should promote health as wealth and wisely in order to change aging stereotypes in the community, caregivers, and families.
Aging is a normal process that requires special care. It is an inevitable stage of life. Older people need special care because of their diminished level of activity, and age-related needs which have affected the mental, social, and financial status of the elderly. This may lead to stress, depression, loneliness, low self-esteem, hormonal imbalance, and insomnia. Most older adults also have chronic diseases that affect their ability to do physical activities and increase negative psychosocial effects. Old age should be a period of happiness. One of the myths about aging is that most of the old people want to age at home. Some also perceive that medicine harms their health and this causes them to be reluctant to their health. Some other adults perceive that old age leads to dementia, and depression. Some of these myths are based on evidence. This is because, when older people age, their cognitive function deteriorates. Some cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and language comprehension deteriorate. This may vary among different adults. The deterioration in cognitive status leads to dementia, which is likely to lead to depression. Most old people want to be alone and spend time at home. This limits their social interaction abilities and increases the chances of depression. Proper family care and engaging in social activities such as community cleaning services, or church services may help to resolve the stress levels that lead to depression. The family should also promote care and support independence of the older adult. The nurse also has a unique role to promote the wellbeing of the older adult. This can be achieved by influencing caregivers and the public about aging. They should reflect on activities that promote independence such as playing musical instruments, crocheting, cooking, baking, reading, journaling, dancing, and walking regularly. These activities will improve the independence of the patient with the support of the caregiver. The nurse can also educate the public on promoting proper aging to reduce the stigma and myths related to aging. The public can offer support to the old age by engaging in social activities with them and through this related interaction, it will help to improve and reduce stereotypes about aging (Ross et al., 2017). The nurses should teach the caregivers on how they can show empathy and respect for the older people. They should also be informed on effective communication to reduce barriers through care. They should also be informed on how to promote autonomy even in the simple choices that the elderly people make. This reduces conflicts and promotes independence.
